Aquí estamos en octubre y qué época más agradable del año para estar trabajando al aire libre en los jardines, paseando en bicicleta o simplemente disfrutando de la hermosa naturaleza (a excepción de los mosquitos, que de momento ¡parecen haberse decidido a no dar tregua!)
Por fin, la isla ha comenzado a calmarse después de la locura del verano y muchos de nosotros estamos pensando en los asuntos que nos mantendrán ocupados durante los próximos meses de invierno.
Tras el gran evento de limpieza que hicimos el mes pasado el 21 de septiembre, ha habido varias actividades más de limpieza en playas y parece que incluso voluntarios de fuera de la isla están contactando con nuestros grupos locales para organizar sus propias acciones como una forma de ayudarnos a mantener Ibiza y Formentera limpias y hermosas.
También hay muchas reuniones y eventos muy interesantes que tendrán lugar este otoño, indicando de manera obvia que los residentes locales están haciendo más esfuerzos para encontrar soluciones a la multitud de problemas ambientales y sociales que enfrentamos como comunidad isleña en un mundo en rápida evolución.
El 7 de octubre, por ejemplo, tuve el gran placer de participar en una presentación y debate celebrado en el centro cívico de Jesús y dedicado a la vivienda sostenible tanto para turistas como para residentes. Los seis ponentes principales describieron muchas formas de llegar a un compromiso de estilo de vida sostenible y parecían entender muy bien lo que podemos lograr si todos participamos en la aplicación de las soluciones disponibles.
A finales de septiembre, también asistí a otra serie muy interesante de presentaciones y debates durante el Foro Marino, que se celebró en el mismo lugar. Aquí, todos los líderes políticos de la isla prometieron su apoyo para mantener nuestras áreas costeras y aguas en buenas condiciones, así como también describieron lo que estaban haciendo para combatir el problema de los desechos plásticos que ingresan a nuestro entorno local. Había una sensación de preocupación y responsabilidad compartida de una amplia variedad de ONG, empresas y personal gubernamental, lo que debería considerarse como una buena base para el desarrollo de futuros programas de protección ambiental.
Con los problemas ahora muy obvios que enfrentamos como especie en peligro de extinción debido a nuestro aumento interminable de hábitos destructivos, no es una gran sorpresa que muchos de nosotros nos estemos dando cuenta de la realidad de la situación y estemos dispuestos a ser parte de la solución. La pregunta que tenemos ahora es, ¿es demasiado tarde o todavía tenemos tiempo para cambiar de rumbo?
Como ecologista veterano, debo decir que estoy muy feliz de ver tantos movimientos positivos en estos días y solo puedo esperar que esto signifique que pronto seremos una comunidad local más resiliente como resultado de todos los esfuerzos de los individuos y grupos ecologistas para hacer de nuestro mundo un lugar más saludable y seguro para vivir. A pesar de la agitación política nacional e internacional que ocurre fuera de nuestra pequeña isla paradisíaca, aquí en Ibiza, tanto las autoridades locales como la ciudadanía parecen estar avanzando muy bien y veo que un futuro programa de cooperación muy positivo evoluciona como resultado de ir conectando los puntos.
Desde mi punto de vista, nunca es demasiado tarde para dar lo mejor de sí y eso es precisamente lo que todos debemos hacer en este momento. Ya no tenemos tiempo para señalar con el dedo y culpar a los malos, ya que la mayoría de nosotros hemos contribuido al desorden que hemos creado y ahora es el momento de unirnos a nuestro enorme cerebro colectivo y transformar nuestro “semi-lisiado mundo” en un estado adecuado que pueda sostener a nuestra población en expansión hacia el futuro. Para decirlo en términos realistas, ¡los humanos han hecho el desastre y ahora los humanos necesitan arreglarlo!
De todas formas, tendremos que hacer un esfuerzo sinérgico para conectar a todos los que están a favor de la vida en la Tierra, olvidar nuestros problemas personales y dar un salto humano gigante fuera de la olla, antes de que todos hirvamos juntos como ingredientes de algún tipo de sopa exótica!
Aquí en Casita Verde, hemos cambiado con éxito nuestro evento dominical semanal a una aventura de educación ambiental, en lugar de una visita a un "restaurante clandestino de estilo bohemio en las colinas". Estamos muy contentos con los resultados de nuestro primer 'domingo piloto' el 6 de octubre y ahora estamos aún más convencidos de que esto es lo correcto y también de que ahora podemos operar el evento de manera mucho más simplificada, incluso si estamos solo unos pocos residentes aquí para recibir a nuestros huéspedes. También nos complace anunciar que finalmente vamos a terminar el proyecto del estanque natural de cuatro años este mes y acabamos de pedir la cobertura impermeable, lo que garantizará que el agua de lluvia que llegue al estanque no se escape. Más adelante, tendremos que inventar algunos métodos diferentes para mantener el estanque lleno de agua, incluso durante los meses de verano, cuando es muy probable que no haya lluvia para completarlo. Aunque esto será todo un desafío, es más o menos parte de nuestra responsabilidad como una especie de 'laboratorio' para inventar técnicas de estilo de vida sostenibles, por lo que supongo que simplemente 'aceptaremos el desafío' y encontraremos una manera de hacerlo, utilizando una combinación de todas las diferentes técnicas que ya han sido inventadas por personas que viven en regiones desérticas y que han compartido amablemente sus conocimientos en Internet.
Teniendo en cuenta que San José (nuestro municipio local) ha declarado recientemente una 'Emergencia climática' y está buscando socios para unirse a la 'Alianza climática' mundial, ahora estamos en buena comunicación con la nueva concejala de medio ambiente y estamos planeando ofrecer todo nuestro Movimiento Ibiza Fènix para ayudarles a encontrar soluciones locales. También estamos profundizando con más seriedad en el estudio del el proyecto Ibiza Ecolandia, así que supongo que este invierno estará lleno de eco-acción y habrá muchas cosas de las que hablar en futuras ediciones de nuestro boletín mensual de Casita Verde.

Here we are in October and what a lovely time of the year it is for being outside working in the gardens, riding around on your bike, or just simply enjoying the beautiful nature (except for the mosquitos, which seem to be bothering nearly everyone at the moment!).
At last the island has begun to calm down after the summer madness and many of us are thinking of things to keep us busy during the winter months ahead.
After the big clean-up event we made last month on the 21st of September, there have been several more beach cleaning activities and it seems that even volunteers from outside of the island are making contact with our local groups in order to organise their own clean-up sessions as a way of helping us to keep Ibiza and Formentera clean and beautiful.
There are also many very interesting and progressive meetings and events going on this autumn, so it’s obvious that the local residents are making more efforts to find solutions to the multitude of environmental and social problems we face as as island community in a rapidly evolving world.
On the 7th of October for example, I had the great pleasure to participate in a presentation and debate held in the civic centre of Jesus and dedicated to sustainable housing both for tourists and residents. The six main speakers described many ways to arrive at a sustainable lifestyle commitment and seemed to understand very well what we can achieve if we all participate in applying the available solutions.
At the end of September, I also attended another very interesting series of presentations and debates during the Marine Forum, which was held in the same place. Here all the political leaders on the island pledged their support for maintaining our coastal areas and waters in good condition as well as described what they were doing to fight the problem of plastic waste entering into our local environment. There was a sense of concern and shared responsibility from a wide variety of NGO’s, business representatives and government personnel, which should be seen as a good base for the development of future environmental protection programmes.
With the now very obvious problems we face as a species in danger of extinction due to our never ending increase in destructive habits, it’s no big surprise that many of us are waking up to the reality of the situation and are willing to be a part of the solution. The question we have now is, are we really too late, or do we still have time to make a difference?
As a veteran environmentalist, I must say that I am very happy to see so much positive movement going on these days and can only hope that this means we will soon be a more resilient local community as a result of all the efforts from both individuals and environmental groups in order to make our world a more healthy and safe place to live. Despite the international political turmoil going on outside of our little island paradise, here in Ibiza, both the local authorities and the local people seem to be getting on very well and I see a very positive future programme of cooperation evolving as a result of connecting the dots.
From my own point of view, it’s never too late to do your best and that’s precisely what we all need to do right now. We no longer have time to point the finger and blame the bad guys, since most of us have actually contributed to the mess we have made and it’s now time to join our enormous collective brain and transform our semi-crippled world into a suitable state which can support our expanding population into the future. To put it in realistic terms, humans have made the mess and now humans need to fix it!
However, we’ll need to make a synergetic effort to connect all those in favour of life on Earth, to forget about our personal problems, and to make one giant human leap out of the cooking pot, before we all get boiled together like ingredients in some kind of exotic soup!
Here in Casita Verde, we have successfully changed our weekly Sunday event into more of an environmental education adventure, instead of a visit to a ‘Bohemian style clandestine restaurant in the hills’. Actually, we were so happy with the results of our first ‘pilot Sunday’ on the 6th of October, we are even more convinced that this is the right thing to do and also that we can operate this very much simplified event even if we are only a few residents here to receive our guests. We’re also happy to announce that we are finally going to finish the four year nature pond project this month and have now ordered the water-proof coat, which will ensure that the rainwater that arrives in the pond won’t leak out of the bottom. Later on, we will need to invent some different methods to keep the pond full of water, even during the summer months when it’s very likely that there will be no rainfall to top it up. Although this will be quite a challenge, it’s more or less part of our responsibility as a kind of ‘laboratory’ for inventing sustainable lifestyle techniques, so I guess we will simply ‘rise to the challenge’ and find a way to do it, using a combination of all the different techniques which have already been invented by people living in desert regions and who have kindly shared their knowledge on the internet.
Considering that San Jose (our local municipality) has recently declared a ‘Climate Emergency’ and is looking for partners to join in the worldwide ‘Climate Alliance’, we are now in good communication with the new environmental councilor and are planning to offer our whole Ibiza Fènix movement to help them with finding local solutions. We’re also getting into a more serious study mode with the Ibiza Ecolandia project, so I guess this winter is going to be full of eco-action and there will be many things to talk about in future editions of our monthly Casita Verde newsletter.
