ENGLISH VERSION BELOW A medida que va llegando el inverno y los días se hacen más cortos, siempre es un placer pasar todo el tiempo posible en el exterior disfrutando de nuestros hermosos jardines y de la luz del sol. Tras un verano seco seguido de un inusualmente largo y cálido otoño, es sorprendente como nuestros jardines y huertos no solo han sobrevivido sino que tienen una pinta increíble con esos tonos verdes tan característicos del invierno aquí en Ibiza. Esto demuestra una vez más que la correcta elección del tipo de árboles y plantas ornamentales es esencial en estos tiempos de rápidos cambios en las condiciones meteorológicas.
Proyecto del Estanque Natural:
A pesar de que nuestro constructor / carpintero interno Dorus Rijkers hizo un gran esfuerzo por terminar de construir el nuevo estanque natural antes de que llegaran las lluvias, no conseguimos la última capa impermeable antes de la temporada de lluvias, por lo que ahora esperamos a tener al menos una semana de clima seco para terminar el trabajo.
Una vez que la capa final esté en el estanque, comenzaremos a plantar los nenúfares y otra flora necesaria para evitar que el agua se evapore y hacer que nuestra nueva construcción se funda en el paisaje al igual que las demás instalaciones en nuestro pequeño paraíso verde. También necesitaremos experimentar con varios métodos diferentes para mantener el estanque lleno de agua durante los meses de verano, cuando es poco probable que llueva, pero debería proporcionarnos suficiente humedad atmosférica para mantener el sistema en buenas condiciones y funcionando como un permanente imán para fauna local.
Voluntarios y talleres:
La finalización de la instalación del estanque natural significará el final de nuestro proceso de construcción del centro ecológico modelo Casita Verde en Ibiza. Cualquier futura oportunidad de voluntariado se transferirá ahora al proyecto de Granada, junto con la construcción de cualquier nueva infraestructura u oferta de talleres residenciales. Esto no quiere decir que la Casita Verde en Ibiza se convertirá en un museo, solo que no estaremos invitando a más voluntarios y estará abierto solo para visitas especiales, así como también talleres educativos ocasionales, siempre que tengamos algo importante para compartir con los participantes interesados.
Domingos en Casita Verde Ibiza:
El 6 de octubre y después de estar cerrado por un período de tres meses, volvimos a abrir nuestro centro para visitantes el domingo con un nuevo concepto y me complace decir que hemos logrado demostrar que, si es necesario, podemos realizar toda la operación con solo dos personas.
Sin embargo, en un esfuerzo por conservar nuestra energía y recursos, ahora estamos planeando concentrar todos nuestros esfuerzos en la educación ambiental, invitando solo a grupos de adolescentes mayores de 12 años de instituciones locales y regionales, además de otras instalaciones educativas como la escuela de turismo de la isla, por ejemplo, además de organizar algunas visitas de grupos con necesidades especiales como Caritas y Fundación Deixalles, etc.
En Casita Verde Ibiza, también continuamos inventando y desarrollando recetas de productos locales más interesantes para transmitir a cualquier empresa establecida o nueva en la isla que quiera llevarlas al mercado. Este siempre ha sido uno de mis pasatiempos favoritos y espero continuar este trabajo durante muchos años en el futuro, ya que disfrutamos mucho el desafío de probar nuevos inventos, y nos sentimos muy orgullosos cuando los vemos utilizados por esas compañías locales que han reconocido su potencial y están dispuestos a invertir en su mayor desarrollo. Una de esas compañías es Frutos Secos de Ibiza, que recientemente ha invertido alrededor de 120,000 € en maquinaria para producir nuestro famoso jarabe de algarroba, que ahora está vendiendo en el mercado local, nacional e internacional (ver www.ibizacarobcompany.com).
Básicamente, la Casita Verde continuará su papel como laboratorio de ideas nuevas e innovadoras sobre técnicas de estilo de vida saludable, pero cambiará su función de una manera bastante radical.
Esto quiere decir que a partir de finales de noviembre de 2019, ¡ya no podremos ofrecer visitas al público en general!
Por supuesto, lo lamentamos mucho por todos aquellos que están acostumbrados a pasar el domingo y se unen a nosotros en nuestro tradicional evento dominical, que se ha llevado a cabo con éxito durante más de 17 años desde abril de 2002, pero realmente sentimos que es el momento para un cambio completo de orientación. En lugar de continuar operando una especie de punto de encuentro de estilo bohemio en las onduladas colinas de San José, decidí que era el momento adecuado para reducir drásticamente nuestra fuerza laboral voluntaria residencial, así como para darme la oportunidad de concentrar mis esfuerzos en mantener las infraestructuras ya construidas y desarrollar aún más el movimiento Ibiza Fènix para que eventualmente pueda funcionar solo, sin mi constante aporte.
Después de haber pasado más de la mitad de mi vida tratando de convencer a otros para que cuiden más de nuestro entorno natural cada vez más frágil, he llegado a algunas conclusiones importantes sobre mi parte en la evolución futura del movimiento. Aunque obviamente todavía necesito participar tanto como pueda con mi conocimiento y experiencia, también necesito dejar de lado la idea de que es mi responsabilidad personal salvar al planeta Tierra de la destrucción humana. Ahora debo aceptar que se trata más de lo que las próximas generaciones quieren hacer que de lo que considero que deberían hacer, o cómo deberían hacerlo. También estoy muy feliz de ver que el aumento del activismo juvenil ha llegado a un punto en el que algunos de los veteranos ahora podemos salir del camino y dejar que los nuevos “agentes del cambio” tomen sus propias decisiones sobre el tipo de mundo el que les gustaría y en el que, de hecho, vivirán.
Por supuesto, nuestra riqueza de información y experiencia acumuladas sigue siendo muy válida en esta imagen holística en evolución, pero en lugar de ser siempre los líderes, tal vez deberíamos adoptar un nuevo rol como guías o asesores e intentar ayudar en cualquier lugar y en cualquier momento en que se nos necesite.
Ibiza Fènix:
Habiendo registrado un total de 13 nuevas asociaciones legales durante los últimos cuatro años, ahora estamos en el proceso de establecer la dirección para un nuevo "Movimiento de liderazgo social" y mi próximo objetivo es asegurar el desarrollo futuro de este proyecto. Espero que cuando llegue a los 70 años de edad, pueda estar en condiciones de reducir al mínimo mis responsabilidades y obligaciones y pasar a un segundo plano, a medida que las personas más jóvenes y enérgicas ocupan mi lugar en roles principales dentro del marco que he creado durante los últimos 30 años aquí en la isla.
Usando la metáfora del pato o ganso iluminado, que es el primero en volar desde el lago donde toda la manada se ha estado alimentando durante algún tiempo y se embarca en un viaje hacia una nueva fuente de alimentos o un lugar adecuado para criar a sus familias, lo más probable es que necesite permanecer más o menos en la posición de liderazgo de todo lo que he creado el tiempo suficiente para establecer el rumbo correcto hacia nuestro destino colectivo, pero luego puedo retroceder y alentar a otros miembros de la comunidad a volar al frente del rebaño y guiar el movimiento hacia el futuro!

As the winter approaches and the days get shorter, it’s always a pleasure to be outside in the garden as much as possible, enjoying our beautiful surroundings and soaking up any available sunshine. After a very dry summer followed by an unusually long and warm autumn season, it’s surprising how our gardens at Casita Verde have not only survived well but are looking really stunning in their lush green winter colours. This further demonstrates that the right choice of trees and ornamental plants is essential in these times of rapidly changing climatic conditions.
The Nature Pond project:
Even though our in-house builder / carpenter Dorus Rijkers made a tremendous effort to finish constructing the new nature pond before the rains came, we didn’t quite get the final waterproof coat on before the rainy season, so are now hoping for at least a week of dry weather to finish the job.
Once the final coat is on the pond, we will begin to plant the water lilies and other flora necessary to keep the water from evaporating and to make our new construction disappear into the landscape just like the other buildings and utilities in our little green paradise. We will also need to experiment with a number of different methods to keep the pond full of water during the summer months, when it is unlikely to rain but should provide us with sufficient atmospheric moisture to maintain the system in good condition and functioning as a permanent attraction for the local wildlife.
Volunteers and workshops:
The completion of the nature pond installation will signify the end of our construction process for the Casita Verde model ecological centre in Ibiza. Any future volunteer opportunities will now be transferred to the Granada project, together with the building of any new infrastructure or offer of residential workshops. This is not to say that the Casita Verde in Ibiza will become a museum, only that we will not be inviting any more live-in volunteers and will be open only for special visits as well as the occasional educational workshop, whenever we have something important to share with interested participants.
Sundays at Casita Verde Ibiza:
On the 6th of October and after being closed for a period of three months, we re-opened our centre for visitors on Sunday with a brand new concept and I am happy to say that we have succeeded in demonstrating that if necessary, we can perform the whole operation with only two people.
However, in an effort to conserve our energy and resources, we are now planning to concentrate all of our efforts on environmental education, by inviting only groups of adolescents over the age of 12 years old from local and regional institutions, plus other educational facilities like the island tourism school for example, as well as hosting some visits from special needs groups such as Caritas and Fundación Deixalles etc.
At Casita Verde Ibiza, we are also continuing to invent and develop more interesting local product recipes to pass on to any established or new enterprises on the island who would like to bring them to the marketplace. This has always been one of my favourite hobbies and I hope to continue this work for many years into the future, as we very much enjoy the challenge of trying new inventions, plus feel very proud when we see them being used by those local companies who have recognised their potential and are willing to invest in their further development. One such company is Frutos Secos de Ibiza who have recently invested around 120,000€ in machinery to produce our famous Carob Syrup, which they are now selling locally, nationally and internationally (see www.theibizacarobcompany.com).
Basically, the Casita Verde will continue its role as a laboratory for new and innovative ideas on healthy lifestyle techniques, but will change its function in quite a radical way.
This is to say that from the end of November 2019, we will no longer be able to offer visits to the general public!
Of course, we feel very sorry for those who are used to pop by on Sunday and join us for our traditional Sunday event, which ran successfully for over 17 years since April 2002, but we really felt like making a complete change of orientation. Instead of continuing to operate a kind of Bohemian style meeting point in the rolling hills of San Jose, I decided it was the right moment to drastically reduce our residential volunteer workforce, as well as give me the chance to concentrate my efforts in maintaining the structures we already built and further develop the Ibiza Fènix movement so that it can eventually run by itself without my constant input.
Having spent more than half my life trying to convince others to take more care of our ever more fragile natural environment, I have come to some important conclusions about my own part in the future evolution of the movement. Although I obviously still need to participate as much as I can with my knowledge and experience, I also need to let go of the idea that it’s my personal responsibility to save the planet Earth from human destruction. I must now accept that it’s more about what the next generations want to do than what I consider they should do, or how they should do it. I’m also very happy to see that the rise in young activism has reached a point where some of us veterans can now step out of the way and let the new ‘game changers’ make their own decisions about the kind of world where they would like to live their lives!
Of course our wealth of accumulated information and experience is still very valid in this evolving holistic picture, but instead of being always the leaders, perhaps we should adopt a new role as guides or advisors and try to help out wherever and whenever we are needed.
Ibiza Fènix:
Having registered a total of 13 new legal associations during the last four years, we are now in the process of establishing the direction for a new ‘Social leadership Movement’ and my next objective is to secure the onward development of this project. I hope that by the time I reach 70 years of age, I may be in a position to reduce my responsibilities and obligations to a minimum and slide gracefully into the background, as younger and more energetic individuals take my place in lead roles within the framework which I have created during the last 30 years here on the island.
Using the metaphor of the enlightened duck or goose, who is the first to fly up from the lake, where the whole flock have been feeding for some time, and set off on a journey towards a new food source or suitable place to raise their families, I will most likely need to stay more or less in the lead position of all I have created just long enough to establish the right course towards our collective destination, but then can drop back and encourage other members of the community to fly at the front of the flock and guide the movement into the future!
