There is a movement, a candle of hope growing stronger every day, which is emanating from the rising consciousness of young people who wish to see a brighter future for themselves and for our dying planet. It is with this new and more vibrant energy, that we must now build our positive evolution as a species in peril of extinction!

Extinction Rebellion’ was born out of frustration and desperation, after too many years of waiting for political leaders to see and to understand that our civilization is rapidly moving towards a very serious state of social and environmental crisis, which if left unchecked, will certainly take the human race and most of the precious life on Earth over a cliff and into the abyss.

We have by now, all the necessary tools and knowledge, to completely restore this beautiful universal spaceship which has been supporting our life for millions of years already. However, in order to achieve this goal, we must all work together like brothers and sisters, first by loving ourselves and then by loving each other, and sharing the same responsibility for protecting this wonderful creation we have been given as a present from the universe to enjoy, to respect and to nurture.

Never before in our long and complicated history on this planet, did we have such a choice to make, or even the opportunity to choose. The time has come, to join our green hearts and evolve our spiritual bond with with the rest of the world. It’s time to think as one and to appreciate that everything is part of the same all embracing universal spirit!

So, having said all that, it’s clearly time to look at how we can personally become a part of the solution, discovering ways to productively use our natural skills and connections with the universe. We need to make our best efforts to ‘rise up’ to the challenge in front of us and become ‘shining stars’ in the collective movement to resurrect this still beautiful paradise while we still have time!

Meanwhile, here in the evolving local paradise at Casita Verde Ibiza, having recently completed the eco-wagon, we are very busy finishing off some of our long term projects, like the famous nature pond next to the family visitors area and the new solar kitchen installation to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels for cooking. We are also making a special natural sports and recreation area above the newly re-installed tipi, which had been out of use for a few years now.

This month, we will begin the process of upgrading our ‘Ibiza Fènix’ website, ready for some real action, as the branches begin to grow and we move into a new era of expansion with our local ecological activities. For this reason, we have invited another student from France, to help Howard Lewis develop the new website, together with Camila Mejia, our lovely Colombian graphic designer. Hopefully, the new version of the website will be on-line and ready for action by mid July.

As the summer begins and we realise that the natural water supplies of Ibiza are running down quickly after a very dry winter, we need to seriously rethink how our tourism business is affecting our island’s heritage and how we can prevent any further degradation.

The local, regional, national and European elections have been and gone, with a few surprises but no really outstanding new proposals to rectify the long term effects of our disconnection with our people and our planet.

For sure there are small improvements, that will be more or less forced to be accepted by the multi-national industries which have been, and still are the main causes of damage to our communal ecosystems. But this is not enough to avert the global disaster that is just waiting to happen, or is happening already.

Greta Thunberg is completely correct to give up some of her study time in favour of both her own future and that of other earthlings trying to figure out how they will survive in a planet which is much hotter than usual and that seems to have developed a kind of death wish or ‘curse’ imposed by the majority of it’s human occupants.

For sure these are very exciting times, but we must realise too that we will need to change many things for the better and we need to do it today, not tomorrow. The great news is that we still can, and that’s what drives me personally to get up every morning and do the very best I am capable of, not giving up until I have used up all my strength and need to rest a few hours before I begin again the next day. As I say to our students and many of the people I meet these days, “As human beings, we have all the power, all the knowledge and all the energy of the universe in our hands, so all we need to do is to connect to it”. I also say that “if you want to see God, then go and look in the mirror, then accept the responsibility!”. Personally, I prefer to ‘run for fun’ now, rather than run for my life later on, when it really is too late to do anything coherent about the situation unfolding before my eyes!

At Casita Verde Ibiza last month, we celebrated our second Festival to connect all the branches of the Ibiza Fènix movement and to have a great day with our friends and visitors. This time we called the event the ‘Ecolandia Festival’, in order to re-introduce the concept of building a new and much larger ecology centre in the near future. (Here I’d like to say a big thank you everyone who helped with the organisation and those who came along to enjoy a wonderful day with us!).

The project ‘Ibiza Ecolandia’ was first introduced in 1999 and even made it past the planning stage, becoming an active pilot project during the summer of 2001, after being initially sponsored by my good friends Emanuel Kuntzelman and Laura Rose from the USA.

However, this first attempt failed to take off at the time due to several reasons, including a complete lack of interest (or even understanding) from the local government of the day, plus the untimely bombing of the twin towers in New York during September of that year, which caused our funding company to lose their Cultural Exchange business and consequently any possibility to continue financially supporting my original vision.

To be honest, I could not have managed to run such a centre at the time, since I had not enough knowledge and experience needed to take on such a complex job.

Perhaps now, as we wake up to the reality of our presence here on planet Earth, we could try to build an updated version of that ‘Ibiza Ecolandia’ project I dreamed of back in 1999 and add this wonderful attraction to the future tourism offer of our beloved island!
