Greenheart News - Autumn 2026

After such a long and unbearably hot summer for most of Europe, we can be happy that at least most of the plants, shrubs and trees we have in Casita Verde Ibiza are still alive and should recover their beauty before the end of the year.
I feel particularly sorry for the local farmers, who have suffered depleted crop yields and shortages of livestock feed due to the excessive heat, but I’m sure there are many other places in this part of the world where the effects of an extra strong ‘El Niño’ have been even more severe.
Of course, this is not a new phenomenon and was first noticed during the 17th century by some Peruvian fishermen working off the coast of South America. Apparently, there was a very strong ‘El Niño’ between 1789 and 1793, when the world experienced one of the longest recorded events, lasting nearly four years and causing global droughts and crop failures. However, the one we are having this year is said to be the strongest El Niño event in recorded history and is due to the warming climate. What many people don’t seem to understand, is that the Earth has never had a completely stable climate and that we frequently shifted from ice ages to warmer periods since our planet was formed.
What exactly causes these changes has still not been successfully identified and requires much more non-biased investigation. Perhaps the recent rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence will shine some light on the world climate change discussion, instead of just telling everyone that it’s all the fault of the regular humans, who are merely trying to live a more modern and comfortable lifestyle.
Another obvious cause of climate change is the endless war game we have been playing almost since the beginning of time, and which has recently become one of the most polluting and devastating forms of trashing our only home.Together with the crazy inventions of deadly diseases and toxic food substances, we may eventually destroy the majority of the human race, as well as most other lifeforms on Earth.
One thing I’m sure of: Unless we stop contaminating our skies, rivers, soils and oceans with ‘forever-chemicals’ and plastic waste, plus destroying our natural world as if it was some kind of bottomless gold mine to be exploited until exhausted, we may never live to find out how our delicately balanced planetary life support system actually functions!
One can only assume that this is the collective death-wish of our elite class and that we are expected to just accept our inevitable fate, without trying to change the course of events and avert a ‘Global Meltdown’. Perhaps the famous mystic ‘Nostradamus’ knew most of this would happen even 500 years ago and actually predicted many things that have since come true.
Personally, I’ve been aware that such a state of affairs could, and probably would happen during my own lifetime, so I decided at a very young age to more or less get prepared for the final act of self sabotage. Certainly since I arrived in Ibiza and recognised my true mission as a resident here, I have devoted most of my time and energy to ensure that at least I could be one of the last to be caught and devoured by the beastly monster of programmed disaster!
Casita Verde Ibiza
Since returning from our wonderful and refreshing trip to Scotland during August, we’ve been quietly preparing the Casita Verde centre to receive visiting students and others interested in our idea of an alternative lifestyle. All those jobs we should have normally done during the summer, were postponed until the weather started to slowly cool down after the middle of September. Although it’s still a bit too hot out in the gardens to do any heavy physical work, we’ve been getting up early in the mornings and working until the sun makes things too uncomfortable to continue.
We still haven't been for a day out to the beach since the end of May, but are planning a trip to our favourite place in Formentera on the last Sunday of the month, when most of the visitors will have gone home and we may more or less have the beach to ourselves.
This year we’ve had loads of figs, so I’ve been busy harvesting and drying as many as possible, as well as eating many kilos throughout the last part of the summer. Of course, we cleaned the whole canal which collects water for our 80 ton storage tank near the top of the hill and already had some heavy rain, so the large eco-pond is beginning to fill up again. We just need to install some new solar batteries that my brother Paul sent us to replace the old ones from the main kitchen system, but we will need to wait until some of our stronger friends arrive before we do that job, as the old batteries are extremely heavy to move.
Apart from developing the educational project we hope to make together with ‘Creatives for the Planet’, we’re also expecting some help from a few of our regular volunteers throughout the autumn, winter and springtime, so that we can be sure the centre remains in perfect condition as an eco-educational facility.
Casita Verde Granada
At Casita Verde Granada, they are exploring the best option for continuing the volunteer program. In the meantime, El Cubanito is continuing to work on improving the site and maintaining the olive grove with the help of friends. He is also preparing for a major planting of ‘Aloe Vera’, one of our favorite plants!
Casita Verde Ireland
Joanna Sweeney, the owner of Beohill farm is presently on a mission to sell her new book ‘Wichcrafting Patways’ (available on Amazon - https://amzn.eu/d/0c8vKyRY), so will not be receiving any volunteers at her Casita Verde centre in Western Ireland until springtime next year.
If you would like any more information about Joanna and her project, then please contact her directly via email at joannasweeney@gmail.com.
Ibiza Limpia
Although we no longer go out and clean beaches around the island, as we did for many years already, we still clean up places we visit while on holidays and also keep the roads around Casita Verde free from garbage as far as we can. Again this year, we cleaned the 8km of road from the Fire Station, next to the main Ibiza-San Antonio road, all the way up the hill to Casita Verde along the Cami Des Fornas and down the other side to the Cami de Benimussa as our contribution to the international ‘World Clean Up Day’ event on Saturday 19th of September.
As usual, we collected quite a lot of garbage during our three hour clean-up as well as denouncing a number of piles of building waste and broken furniture etc. However, this year we found the roads notably cleaner than in previous years and met some of the neighbours who were cleaning up their own piece of the road, plus many others who stopped to thank us for our initiative! Perhaps in the future, more of the local residents will help to keep our little part of the island much cleaner and more pleasant to transit.
For the moment, I continue to participate in the meetings of the local Water Alliance
(https://alianzaagua.org/es/) and the Zero Waste Alliance (https://plasticfree.es/en), but also arrange to meet with people interested in presenting projects related to our movement.
If you would like to visit our centre for a guided tour during the cool season, (see the section about ‘tours’ on this website), organise a weekend conference about environmental subjects, or want to know how you can be a more eco-conscious citizen, please get in touch by email, sending your request to chris.greenheart@gmail.com, or by calling our main office on +34 608838190 (English and Spanish)
With warm greetings from Casita Verde,
