Greenheart News - Autumn 2025

ree

After such a strange summer season, with temperatures reaching higher than average levels and many plants or trees dying from the extreme weather conditions, it’s easy to imagine that the Earth is heading for a predicted disaster. However, this is not the first time we’ve seen strange weather phenomena during the human history of our planet and clearly we are going to suffer as a result of the obvious catastrophes that are occurring due to dramatic climate change.

As I’ve mentioned many times before in my blogs, I’m not at all convinced that the rising levels of CO2 are driving the changes in the world climate, but we’re certainly pumping out a lot of other very harmful products, which are definitely helping to destroy the natural ecosystems that keep us all alive.

At the same time, constant wars and the threat of more wars are filling our heads with disturbing news every day of the week. Worldwide civil unrest is reaching plague proportions, as civilians begin to realise that our leaders, both elected and un-elected, seem to be driving us to the edge of a rapidly approaching precipice.

Good news broadcasts are few and far between, so it’s difficult to stay in a positive mood while surrounded by what seems to be an all consuming human made fire storm, which is designed to reduce our numbers, or even completely eradicate us from the planet we’ve been living on since the dawn of mankind.

It’s not quite clear to the majority of those watching the show, just what are the reasons for such a man-made calamity, but I guess there must be some master plan that has been designed by a group of like-minded psychopaths, who wish to cause the maximum amount of harm to an otherwise well intentioned majority of ‘normal’ human beings, who just want to live a happy and fulfilling life and enjoy their earthly experience.

We are perpetually bombarded with reports from presumably ‘educated scientists’ that we humans are the main problem to our own survival, simply by wishing to get the best out of our circumstances and help to make the world a better place than when we arrived here.

Imagine just how much money, resources and opportunities we are destroying by being in constant competition with each other, rather than sharing the wonderful gifts and almost unlimited and renewable beneficial services that the natural world offers.

For sure, if you arrived here from another planet, where things are more fairly distributed and better organised, you would probably think this place was some kind of giant lunatic asylum, or perhaps a self destructive video game where no-one wins and everyone loses in the end. In this case, I’m not surprised that Elon Musk wants to occupy Mars, as if to give the human race a second chance at continuing to explore the meaning of life and expand our knowledge of the universe.

As an ecologist, I have to admit that the majority of the programs that the so-called ‘Green economists’ suggest to improve our chances of living well or even surviving into the future, are not based on very reliable or even well researched information.

Hopefully, in the very near future, one of the many ‘New Energy’ devices presently being developed will be accepted for general use and we can stop burning fossil fuels to get around and to power our industries. This will no doubt greatly disturb the present global balance of power, but I don’t see that we have too many other options left to choose from if we are ever going to live in a more peaceful and resilient environment!

Casita Verde Ibiza

Nothing very exciting has happened since my last blog, except that everything looks so dry all over the centre and I'll be surprised if we have too many plants left when the heavy early autumn rains eventually arrive at the end of the summer (if they arrive at all that is!)

I began this blog by saying that it’s been a very strange summer and nothing like what I have experienced during the whole of my 40 years on the island.

At the end of May, we suddenly jumped into July or August weather conditions and this sudden rise in temperature caused all the lemons on our 24 lemon trees to suddenly fall off, or even get ‘cooked’ on the branches. The carobs began to fall off the trees before the end of July and the grapes hardly bothered to show up for the party. Tiny figs grew on some of the fig trees, but many got cooked or completely dried out before they were ready to eat. Fortunately, we have quite a few trees, so maybe we can harvest at least enough to dry for the winter.

Meanwhile, having finally changed the lenses in both of my eyes for some excellent new ones, I can now see what I’m doing as I maintain the centre in good order, plus I can drive our vehicles and ride my electric bike with far more safety.

From the beginning of October and all the way through until the end of May next year, we’ll be offering our usual guided tours of the centre, open for interested groups of visitors as well as students from local senior schools.

(Please see our ‘Tour’ section on this website for more details).

Apart from this offer, we continue to maintain our three websites running, although we are planning to somehow link the ‘www.ibizafenix.org site to our casitaverde.com site in order to reduce costs and increase visibility.

We also add new recipes to our ‘You are what you eat’ guide, whenever we invent or discover anything interesting. This guide can be accessed by sending us your email address, so we can invite you to look at it!

Of course, we are constantly trying to keep the roads surrounding our centre free from unsightly garbage and go on denouncing larger objects via the ‘Linea Verde’ system, but it seems like an endless game which we’re not really winning, as I see more and more garbage dumped into the nature (maybe it’s the new lenses I had installed!).

Actually, we recently cleaned 8km of country roads around Casita Verde, joining the local action group to celebrate ‘’World clean-up day 2025’.

Again, we were lucky to have five willing volunteers to help us and didn’t get overheated during the job, since we began at 08.30 and finished the main work before it got too warm.

I continue to participate as one of the directors of the island Water Alliance

(Alianza por el Agua), plus form part of the Zero Waste Alliance (see https://alianzaagua.org/es and https://plasticfree.es/en) as well as attend various meetings related to local environmental objectives.

Casita Verde Granada

Casita Verde Granada is temporarily closed for residential volunteers until further notice, since the director Rey Aldana will be working at the Juntos Farm project in Ibiza, together with a team of friends, helping to continue developing the organic food production.
