Noticias de Casita Verde – Marzo 2019
¿Qué pasó con el invierno de este año? ¿va a llegar tarde, o tal vez no lo haga en absoluto?
Por lo que puedo recordar, cuando comencé a vivir en la isla de Ibiza en 1987 nunca he pasado un invierno con tantos días cálidos y soleados, especialmente en febrero.
Estoy seguro de que nadie se está quejando de todos esos días de sol, ya que por lo general no nos sentimos con frío y con la humedad calando los huesos, como en otros años desde mediados de enero hasta mediados de marzo que tenían algunos días agradables, pero no todos los días como si fuera primavera. Sin embargo, tengo la sensación de que esta tendencia al calentamiento tendrá algunas consecuencias "no tan emocionantes" si continúa.
Afortunadamente, el mundo finalmente se está dando cuenta de que los humanos estamos causando un cambio en el clima y que pagaremos un alto precio por nuestra falta de acción en el futuro cercano.
Ya no podemos ver el problema como algo lejano, como una tormenta de truenos en el horizonte. Este problema inducido por el hombre está comenzando a causar daños catastróficos tanto para el planeta como para muchas personas en todo el mundo, por lo que no es sorprendente que jóvenes valientes e inteligentes como Greta Thunberg, la niña sueca de 16 años, se pongan en pie y demanden ser escuchados. (Quizás sea también el momento de invitar a estos jóvenes a participar de las discusiones políticas y en decisiones que jugarán un papel vital en su futuro). Los niños y adultos jóvenes todavía tienen mucha creatividad y eso es precisamente lo que vamos a necesitar para salir del lío en el que, finalmente, nos hemos metido desde el comienzo de la revolución industrial. En realidad, un grupo llamado 'Children First World' está planeando una reunión en Ibiza a fines de marzo y un evento, de cinco días, a principios de julio con la idea de mostrar que los niños pueden jugar un papel importante en el diseño del mundo en el que a todos nos gustaría vivir.
¡Estad atentos a más noticias sobre esos eventos, que se anunciarán en nuestras plataformas de redes sociales, por supuesto!
Mientras tanto, aquí en las Islas Baleares, podemos estar felices de que nuestro gobierno regional esté dando grandes pasos para evitar el uso de combustibles fósiles en nuestra vida diaria y haya establecido algunos objetivos muy ambiciosos. Estos incluyen más subsidios para energía renovable y puntos de carga de automóviles eléctricos, además de ayudas para reducir el consumo de energía y más iniciativas locales para apuntar a un mundo completamente libre de carbono.
Con un clima más cálido podemos esperar más condiciones de sequía, lo que aumenta el estrés en nuestros suministros de agua locales, además de lluvias más intensas que sobrecargarán nuestros sistemas de alcantarillado. Nuevamente, aquí tenemos suerte, ya que tenemos una maravillosa ONG local llamada Alianza por el Agua de Ibiza y Formentera, que ha reunido una lista muy coherente de 20 sugerencias y trabaja incesantemente para hacerla accesible a todos los partidos políticos locales que se presentarán en las próximas elecciones de mayo de este año. También están informando a la prensa, televisión y programas de radio sobre la campaña, así que supongo que podemos esperar alguna acción sobre este tema como resultado directo.
Y luego está la "historia del plástico", que también es otro "tema candente", tanto en la isla como en todo el mundo que empieza a “despertar”. Nuevamente, somos muy afortunados aquí en Ibiza, ya que tenemos un ejército cada vez mayor de voluntarios dispuestos a emplear su tiempo libre en limpiar todo el desorden que dejan los turistas y residentes descuidados, además de la enorme cantidad de basura que se acumula en nuestras playas cada año.
Nuevamente, el gobierno local está tomando una posición firme para reducir la cantidad de plástico que se está creando, mientras que otros grupos ambientales locales y nuevas empresas están encontrando maneras de reutilizar lo que ya existe e incluirlo en un modelo de economía circular, que por supuesto, es mucho más sostenible.
En Casita Verde, continuamos con nuestro programa de mejorar nuestro modelo de estilo de vida "autosuficiente", instalar más sistemas de energía renovable, sistemas de recolección de agua y áreas de cultivo para frutas y verduras.
También terminaremos el famoso eco-wagon este mes y luego podremos ofrecer a nuestros visitantes un recorrido por una casa modelo autosostenible totalmente integrada sobre ruedas, que también se ha hecho de materiales principalmente reutilizados de una manera muy artística.
Durante el mes de febrero y continuando este mes, hemos estado invitando a más escuelas locales a visitar Casita Verde y ver nuestros sistemas de recolección, uso y reciclaje de agua bastante completos, que incluyen el uso de retretes ecológicos para reducir aún más nuestra dependencia de suministros de agua externa.
Además, cada jueves, hemos estado realizando talleres semanales sobre una variedad de temas interesantes como la construcción ecológica, la energía solar, el compostaje, la fabricación de un calentador de agua a partir de materiales reutilizados, etc. Aunque hacemos estos talleres todos los jueves en beneficio de nuestros residentes estudiantes, los miembros/socios de Casita Verde también son bienvenidos a unirse y pueden visitar nuestra página de Facebook para obtener información sobre los próximos cursos.
También estamos ofreciendo una variedad de interesantes cursos residenciales de dos semanas a partir de finales de abril de este año, así que visita nuestro página web en www.casitaverde.com/eco-education para obtener más detalles.
El mes pasado, nuestra ONG local Ibiza Limpia recibió una subvención de 8000 € de la organización ‘Charity pot’ de la compañía de jabones "Lush". Decidimos usar este dinero para comprar unos cientos de copias del pequeño libro "No More Plastic", además de contratar a un educador ambiental capacitado para ayudar a los maestros de inglés, en varias escuelas locales, a usar el libro como soporte extra muy útil para el aprendizaje. Aprender inglés con un propósito particular: ¡ayudar a los jóvenes a abandonar el uso del plástico en sus vidas!
También estamos ocupados solicitando más fondos a una Fundación en Suiza para comenzar nuestro proyecto ecoturístico original 'Ibiza Fènix', que ahora ha sido posible gracias a los recientes cambios en las leyes agrícolas regionales, que permiten a los agricultores recibir hasta a seis huéspedes de pago en sus casas rurales. Este es un proyecto bastante ambicioso, que incluye unirse a rutas de senderismo y ciclismo, con ofertas de talleres y experiencias diferentes para visitantes y locales que deseen explorar la isla sin el uso de transporte motorizado y aprender algunas cosas interesantes a lo largo del camino. Obviamente, hay mucho trabajo por hacer, pero nuestro objetivo es comenzar un proyecto piloto a finales del verano 2019, si logramos recibir los fondos necesarios para ello.

"El proposito de la vida no es ser feliz. Es ser útil, ser honorable, ser compasivo, tener alguna diferencia en que hayas vivido y que hayas vivido bien".

What ever happened to the winter this year? is it going to arrive late, or perhaps not at all?
As far as I can remember from when I began to live on the island of Ibiza in 1987, I’ve never experienced a winter with so many warm and sunny days, especially during February.
Although I’m sure no-one is complaining about how warm it’s been, since we are usually feeling quite chilly and damp all the way from mid January until the middle of March, with some nice days, but not every day like springtime. However, I have a feeling that this warming trend will have some ‘not so exciting’ consequences if it continues.
Fortunately, the world is finally waking up to the idea that we humans are causing the climate to change and that we will pay a heavy price for our lack of action in the near future.
No longer can we see the problem as something in the distance, like a thunder storm on the horizon. This human induced problem is beginning to cause catastrophic damage to both the planet and many people around the world, so it’s no surprise that brave and intelligent youngsters like Greta Thunberg, the 16 year old girl from Sweden are standing up and demanding to be listened to! (Perhaps it’s also time to invite these youngsters into political discussions and to participate in company decisions, which will play a vital role in their future). Children and young adults still have plenty of creativity and that’s precisely what we’re going to need to get out of the mess we’ve finally got ourselves into since the beginning of the industrial revolution. Actually, a group called ‘Children First World’ are planning a meeting in Ibiza towards the end of March, plus a five day event in early July, with the idea to outline the important part children can play in designing the kind of world where we’d all like to live.
Stay tuned for more news on those events, which will be advertised on our social media platforms of course!
Meanwhile, here in the Balearic islands, we can be happy that our regional government is making big steps away from the use of fossil fuels in our daily lives and has set some very ambitious targets. These include more subsidies for renewable energy and electric car charging points, more help with reducing energy consumption and more local initiatives to aim for a completely carbon free world.
Also, with a warmer climate, we can expect more drought conditions, putting greater stress on our local water supplies, plus heavier rain showers, which will overload our sewerage systems. Again, here we are lucky, since we have a wonderful local NGO called the Alianza por el Agua de Ibiza y Formentera, (Water Alliance of Ibiza and Formentera), who have put together a very coherent list of 20 suggestions and are busy feeding them to all the local political parties who will run in the next elections during May this year. They are also informing the press, TV and radio programmes about the campaign, so I guess we can expect some action on this subject as a direct result.
And then there’s the ‘Plastic story’, which is also another ‘hot topic’, both on the island and all over the waking world. Again, we are very lucky here in Ibiza, as we have an ever expanding army of volunteers willing to give up their spare time to go clean up all the mess left by careless tourists and residents, plus an enormous amount of trash that washes up on our beaches each year.
Again, the local government is taking a firm stand in order to reduce the amount of plastic that is being created, while other local environmental groups and new companies are finding ways to reuse what’s already out there and include it in a circular economy model, which is of course much more sustainable.
At Casita Verde, we go on with our programme of improving our ‘self sufficient’ lifestyle model, installing more renewable energy systems, water collection systems and growing areas for fruit and vegetables.
We will also finish the famous eco-wagon this month and can then offer our visitors a tour of a totally integrated self sufficient model house on wheels, which has also been made from mainly reused materials in a very artistic way.
During February and continuing for most of this month, we’ve been inviting more local schools to visit Casita Verde and see our quite complete water collection, use and recycling systems, which includes the use of eco-toilets to further reduce our dependence on external water supplies.
Also, each Thursday, we’ve been doing weekly workshops on a variety of interesting topics such as eco building, solar energy, composting, making a water heater from reused materials etc. Although we do these workshops each Thursday for the benefit of our resident students, members are also welcome to join us and should check out our Facebook page for information about the next courses available.

Last month, our local NGO Ibiza Limpia received an 8000€ grant from the ‘Lush’ soap company ‘Charity pot’ organisation. We decided to use this money to buy a few hundred copies of the amazing little book ‘No more plastic’, plus employ a well trained environmental educator to help English teachers in a number of local schools use the book as a very useful aid to learning the English language with a particular purpose - to help young people give up the use of plastic in their daily lives!
We are also busy applying for more funding from a Foundation in Switzerland, in order to begin our original ‘Ibiza Fènix’ eco tourism project, which has now been made possible due to the recent changes in the regional agricultural laws, enabling farmers to receive up to six paying guests in their farm houses. This is quite an ambitious project, which includes joining up walking and cycling routes, with offers of workshops and different experiences for visitors and locals wishing to explore the island without the use of motorised transport, and learn some interesting things along the way. Obviously, there is a lot of work do do in preparing the whole story, but we’re aiming to begin a pilot project at the end of the summer this year, if we manage to receive the correct amount of funding.
