Thyme
Thyme (Thymus spec. and related genders, Lamiaceae)

Ibicencan: frígola
The headed thyme (Thymbra capitata; photo) is rather frequent in the rosemary communities on Ibiza and the other Balearic Islands. Less frequent is the common thyme (Thymus vulgaris). Both species are used medicinally, whereas for the odourless thyme (Micromeria inodora) no medicinal uses have been described.
In the Pityuses the headed has some traditional uses. Leaves and flowers are boiled to achieve aigua de frígola, which serves against stomach aches. For this latter use it was traditionally collected on Saint John's day, from which habit it received its Catalan name. Other uses are the same as those of the less frequent common thyme, for example for digestion.
