School Visit from French School in November
It was a true joy to receive once again the visit of students from the French School in Ibiza. They came in good company, with a few mothers, their teacher Anne and the school's director.
This time around, the boys and girls thoroughly enjoyed an energetic visit, while they took notes of all the things they found interesting.
We started off getting to know how the Eco-Toilet works, in which the composting process transforms human waste, together with toilet paper (recycled, of course!) and sawdust, into a rich compost - dark earth full of the nutrients that our "donors" leave in there every day!
We continued the visit with the fields of 'aloe vera barbadensis', which is the main crop at Casita Verde, since we do not have a water well to obtain water from all year round. We investigated the marvellous properties of aloe vera, and with Chris the director discovered how to make a delicious aloe vera juice. Do you remember the recipe, boys and girls? And the secret to avoid our juice being bitter?
After a fun time at the juice bar we went over to the recycling point, where we investigated where each article we wish to get rid of should go, and how to decide whether a container is only cardboard or has something else... And we found the symbols which indicate that an item can indeed be recycled!
After a snack, and thinking together about some of the cycles of nature, and specifically about the water cycles, we were ready to burn some energy with a little excursion up to the top of the hill, where we discovered step by step how Casita Verde obtains water from the rain in wet seasons and saves it up to be used all year round.
From the water tank we came back down, following the tubes that take the water down to main centre, and there we found the lovely outside shower where volunteers can have showers with rainwater heated by the sun and using biodegradable soaps, which can be absorbed by nature. We also use biodegradable soap for washing dishes, and in that way we can re-use the water over our plants.
To prove it, we went to plant a baby tree in honour of their visit, feeding it with the hu-manure from the composting toilet and watering it with the soapy dishwater. Now that's re-using everything as much as possible!
The group waved a warm goodbye to our team, and headed off back to their school, where we hope they have a lot to talk about after this visit.
A bientot!
