Recycling and Waste Disposal in Ibiza

Until recently, recycling large items in Ibiza has been difficult or almost impossible, due to the lack of suitable facilities for the public. However, this is is all changing, as the installation and commissioning of 7 new recycling centres (called ‘Deixallerias’ or ’puntos limpios’) is now underway and the island has already three such centres in function to date.

At each punto limpio, you can dump your old fridge, cooker or boiler, car tyres, batteries of all kinds, brick rubble and building waste, glass and windows, furniture, doors, voluminous garden waste, used cooking oil, old paints and even hazardous chemicals such as pesticides and cleaning products.

There is no charge for leaving your waste here for recycling, but you will have to take along your identification to prove that you are a resident of the municipality offering the recycling service.

On your way in to the centre, your vehicle will be weighed with all the things for recycling, then weighed on the way out, to make a record of recycled material collected.

The not for profit organisation ‘Fundació Deixalles’,(www.deixalles.org) with it’s main centre on the Montecristo industrial estate next to the Ibiza-San Antonio road (Calle pou de na Massiana), takes in all kinds of furniture and electrical goods, including books, plates and valuable objects. These are refurbished where necessary and sold at very cheap prices to the public. The employees operating the workshops and warehouse are selected from those who have suffered social problems and need help to be re-inserted into the local work force, so by using this service, you are contributing to a very worthy cause.

If the things you would like to donate to the foundation are large or heavy, they also offer a free pick-up service by calling 971 191118.

On the last Saturday of each month during autumn, winter and spring, the Fundació Deixalles offers a free one hour guided tour of the recycling separation plant, from 12noon until 1pm. For more information about this offer, call Fundació Deixalles on 971 191118, or Casita Verde on 917 187353.
