Plantain
Plantain (Plantago spec., Plantaginaceae)
French: plantain
Russisch: подорожник
Niederländisch: weegbree
The ribwort or English plantain (Plantago lanceolata) is found in meadows with much nitrogen. Another plantain frequent on Ibiza is Plantago lagopus, which can be used in the same way as this one. Also the greater or common plantain (Pl. major) is similarly used but has less of the effective substances.
Plantain teas are used in cases of catarrhs, also asthma, likewise diarrhaea and other digestion problems. To treat inflammations of the eyelid eyewashes with a decoction more concentrated than this tea are made. Wounds and burns are treated with leaves that are put on the sick skin.
A species used in a different way is the fleawort (Pl. psyllium).
