Casita Verde Road Clean

On a splendid sunny November Thursday at Casita Verde, a team of volunteers cleaned two of the most commonly used access routes to the centre (8km of road in total), gathering more than ten large bags of garbage which was then separated and disposed of in the correct manner. This annual cleaning at least ensures that for some part of the year, we can enjoy travelling to and from the Casita Verde without having to look at unsightly garbage left by uncaring residents and visitors.

During the last 17 years of cleaning beaches, country roads and woodlands in Ibiza and Formentera, one member of the Greenheart team has made some interesting observations with respect to the type of garbage found discarded in the nature.
It seems that the majority of garbage left at picnic sites, thrown from cars and buses, or dropped by cyclists or walkers’, has something in common. More than 90% of this garbage is from fast food packaging, throwaway plates and cups etc, unhealthy soft drinks cans and bottles, unhealthy snack bars or other junk food, cigarette cartons and butts, plus a variety of sex or drug related products.

Very seldom if ever would someone with enough ecological awareness to eat properly, drink healthy products and appreciate the countryside, actually throw away the packaging into the nature. It does happen of course but it’s a rare thing! This draws the conclusion that those who treat their own bodies with little or no respect, are far more likely to treat our planet Earth the same way. Perhaps it’s time the producers of such garbage made more effort to educate their supporters and also to assume some responsibility for the damage caused to our common environment!
